The United States and France are historically bound as the U.S.’s oldest ally, a relationship officially established by the 1778 Treaty of Alliance. This bond was forged during the American Revolution when France provided vital military and financial support to help the nascent United States secure its independence.
France chose to support the American Revolutionaries for two reasons. First, in global politics, France had been engaged in periodic wars with Great Britain.
Second, many people in France, especially the nobility, were deeply engaged in the intellectual movement known as the Enlightenment and were inspired by new ideas about human society, rationalism, science, and progress.
