Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme is an herb of the group Thymus of aromatic perennial evergreen herbs a relative to oregano in the mint family Lamiaceae.

Thyme has culinary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. The species most commonly cultivated and used for culinary purposes is Thymus vulgarise. Thyme is used in many cuisines, European, Mediterranean, African, Latin and Central American, American, and the Caribbean

Where does it grow?

Thyme is cultivated in a hot, sunny location. It tolerates drought well. The plant can take deep freezes and grow well on dry slopes.

Culinary use

In some Mid-Eastern countries, the condiment za’atar Arabic for both thyme and marjoram contains the essential oils found in thyme. Thyme is a common component of the bouquet garni and herbs de Provence. Thyme is found in stores fresh and dried. The fresh form is more flavourful, but also less convenient; storage life is barely a week. Can still be used after several months if carefully frozen.
