The famous contest is not everything about the famous dog. The history of the Hot Dog traces back to ancient sausage-making traditions in Europe, eventually evolving into an iconic American street food. German immigrants brought long, thin sausages (like frankfurters and wieners) and dachshund dogs to America in the 1800s.
Why is it called a “Hot Dog”? The name sounds strange if you think about it — why would anyone call food a dog? From German sausages and baseball stadiums to dachshund jokes. In the late 1800s, people joked that cheap street sausages might actually contain dog meat.
